Almost every Umrah guide online spends most of its time on ihram. How to wrap it, what fabric to get, whether to bring two sets. That is all useful. But it is a small part of your trip.
Most UK pilgrims go for Umrah for seven to fourteen days. Being in the state of ihram will likely be for a small duration of the whole trip. The rest of the time, the prayers, the tawaf, the sa'i, the stay in Madinah, the meals, the long nights in the masjid, you need actual clothes.
This guide covers what to pack for that other part of your trip: the thobes, the layering pieces, and what to leave at home.
A Note on Ihram (And Then We Will Move On)
Men wear two plain white, unstitched sheets: the izar around the lower body, the rida over the upper body. Bring two sets minimum. Nothing stitched while in the state of ihram. Sandals that leave the top of the foot or instep uncovered, show most of the toes and heel, and completely expose the ankle.
That is it. The rest of this guide is about everything else.
The Thobes You Will Actually Wear
Once you exit ihram, thobes and jubbas are the natural choice for men in Saudi Arabia. They are appropriate for the masjid, practical in the heat, easy to move in, and completely at home in Makkah and Madinah.
The key difference between dressing for Umrah and dressing for a UK occasion is the climate. Makkah in summer regularly hits 40 to 45°C. Even in winter, daytime temperatures sit at 25 to 30°C. Madinah is slightly cooler, with evenings that can feel genuinely refreshing by comparison.
The heavier, darker thobes that work well for Jummah in East London or Birmingham are not what you want here. You need lightweight, breathable, loose-fitting options.
Which Thobe Styles Work Best for Umrah
Moroccan Gandouras
Moroccan gandouras are arguably the most practical choice for Umrah trips. They are traditionally designed for warm climates: loose through the body, often open at the neck, light in fabric. Cotton or linen gandouras breathe well in Saudi heat and give you the freedom of movement you need when you are covering considerable distances on foot.
White and cream gandouras are particularly sensible. White reflects heat rather than absorbing it, and it is the dominant colour you will see worn by men around the Haram.
Emirati and Omani Thobes
Saudi, Emirati, and Omani style thobes are all at home in Saudi Arabia and entirely appropriate for the trip. If you already own a couple, they are worth bringing. Dishdasha styles and collar thobes work well for daily salah and walks through the haram complex.
Pay attention to the fabric weight. Terry rayon can retain heat in extreme temperatures. If you have a choice, cotton or lighter blends will be more comfortable than heavier formal fabrics during the hot parts of the day.
Moroccan Djellabas for Madinah Evenings
Madinah tends to be cooler than Makkah, especially in the evenings. A lightweight djellaba worn over a gandoura is a practical combination for that part of the trip. It is appropriate for the masjid, easy to take on and off, and works as a layering piece without adding much weight to your bag. For the height of summer in Makkah, a djellaba is likely too warm to wear consistently outdoors.
How Many Thobes to Actually Pack
Most Umrah trips run seven to fourteen days. You do not need fourteen thobes.
Hotels near the Haram in both Makkah and Madinah offer laundry services that are quick and reasonably priced. Pack five or six thobes and use the laundry. That gives you a clean rotation without overloading your luggage for the journey between the two cities.
One thing worth knowing from pilgrims who have made the trip: bring thobes you are genuinely comfortable resting in, not just praying in. You will spend long periods in the masjid, including through the night for Tahajjud. A thobe that is stiff or uncomfortable becomes a real problem when you are exhausted.
Colour Choices for Saudi Arabia
White is the most widely worn colour around the Haram and is always appropriate. Light grey, cream, and pale shades work well in the heat because they reflect rather than absorb sunlight.
A darker thobe for Madinah evenings, or for the occasional cooler day, is worth having. But in Makkah especially, darker colours mean more heat absorbed throughout the day. Keep most of your rotation light.
Why Fabric Matters More Than Usual Here
In the UK, fabric choice affects comfort and appearance. In Saudi Arabia during Umrah trips, it affects how physically manageable your day is. You are outside for extended periods in serious heat, walking large distances in crowds.
Cotton is the most breathable and the most forgiving. Lightweight linen works well if you can find it in a thobe cut. Avoid synthetic blends that do not breathe. Polyester-heavy fabrics retain heat and cause real discomfort when you are active. For a full breakdown on thobe fabrics and how they perform in different conditions, our fabric guide covers the options in detail.
What to Leave at Home
- Heavy winter thobes: double-layered, wool, or thick structured fabrics will be uncomfortable from the moment you land in Makkah.
- Your best formal thobe: anything that requires high maintenance or a very tailored cut is impractical for high-volume walking and masjid floors. Save it for when you are back.
- Too many thobes: five or six is enough. Laundry services are available and you do not need the extra weight.
-
Scented products for ihram wear: pack any fragrances separately and keep them inaccessible until you have exited the state of ihram.
A Simple Clothing Packing List
- 2 sets of ihram with an ihram belt
- Open-top flip flops suitable for extended walking
- 5 to 6 lightweight thobes or gandouras, mostly in white and light colours
- 1 lightweight djellaba for Madinah evenings
- Comfortable underwear and vest layers (removed when entering ihram state)
- Socks for Madinah and air-conditioned spaces
- Kufi or simple head covering
If you are still choosing which thobes to bring, our summer thobes guide covers the lightweight options that hold up best in heat, and most of them travel well to Saudi Arabia too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear any style of thobe for Umrah?
Yes. Once you have exited the state of ihram, there are no restrictions on thobe style. Moroccan, Omani, Emirati, Saudi styles are all appropriate. The practical consideration is fabric weight and breathability, not the cut or regional style.
Is white mandatory outside of ihram?
No. White is traditional and practical in the heat, but there is no religious requirement to wear white outside of ihram. Light colours are recommended for comfort, but you can wear any modest colour.
Can I buy thobes in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. There are markets and shops near the Haram in both Makkah and Madinah. That said, it is worth bringing what you need rather than relying on shopping once you arrive. Your time is better spent in ibadah.
What should I wear on the flight from the UK?
Most UK pilgrims travel in a comfortable thobe or shalwar kameez. If you plan to enter ihram on the plane before reaching the miqat, prepare your ihram before boarding and change at the right point. If not, a light thobe makes the journey more comfortable.
How formal do I need to be for salah in the Masjid al-Haram?
Not very. The Masjid al-Haram accommodates millions of people at any one time. A clean, modest thobe is completely appropriate for all five prayers. There is no dress code beyond general Islamic modesty standards.
May Allāh accept the ibadah of all those performing Umrah. If you are still putting together your travel wardrobe, Thāwab Clothing stocks a wide range of lightweight gandouras and thobes built for exactly this kind of wear.
